Ativan belongs to the drug category benzodiazepines. It is a sedative medicine used to treat anxiety. The medicine is also used in the treatment of insomnia, symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. The medicine is not preferably given for long term use. The active component lorazepam behaves as antidepressant, anti-panic agents and muscle relaxants.
Mechanism of action:
Ativan shows its therapeutic action by enhancing the activity of a neurotransmitter gamma-amino butyric acid. It inhibits the nervous system and reducing the state of mental and physical overexcitement.
How to take:
Ativan is to be taken orally. Dose, frequency of administration and duration of therapy depends upon the response of the patient towards the treatment.
Some of the medicines that interact with Ativan 2mg tablets are probenecid, aminophylline, an antidepressant, and barbiturates like phenobarbital, narcotic pain medicine, and antihistamine medicine.
Some of the side effects associated with the use of Ativan 2mg tablets are drowsiness, suicidal thoughts, unusual changes in mood, hallucinations, feeling of restlessness, trouble in swallowing and changes in vision.
The missed dose should be taken as soon as remember. If it is almost the time of next scheduled dose, the missed dose is skipped. Never take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdosing should not be done. If the medicine is overdosed and the adverse symptoms appear, visit to the nearby hospital immediately.
The medicine should be stored properly away from direct heat and moisture.
